History of SHUBUKAN

The SHUBUKAN is a dojo of OKINAWA SHORIN-RYU KARATEDO founded in 1973 by Master Uema Joki (1920–2011).
Master Uema Joki studied under distinguished masters such as Chibana Choshin, Shima Shigemasa, and Shimabukuro Taro from his youth, receiving profound instruction in both mind and technique.
The name "SHUBUKAN" embodies the philosophy: "Guard the master's teachings and guard oneself. Guarding oneself means being self-reliant, and preserving OKINAWA KARATE is what leads to the true path." The core principle of the dojo is the teaching that KARATE is not merely self-defense, but that fostering the spirit of self-reliance, humility, and the attitude of continuous learning are paramount.
SHUBUKAN has students not only in domestic dojos but also overseas in countries such as Switzerland, Spain, the Czech Republic, Canada, Germany, and India, spreading the technique and spirit of OKINAWA KARATE worldwide. Instruction continues today for a wide range of generations, from children to adults, focusing on strengthening the mind, technique, and body while emphasizing "courtesy, sincerity, and the spirit of indomitable perseverance."

Uema Takeshi 3rd Director of SHUBUKAN, SHORIN-RYU SHUBUKAN KYOSHI 7th DAN

Born in 1975. 3rd Director of SHUBUKAN. Studied under Uema Joki (Founder of SHUBUKAN, grandfather), Uema Yasuhiro (2nd Director of SHUBUKAN, father), and Sekiguchi Yoshiharu. He develops instruction that merges sport KARATE and traditional KARATE, transmitting the profound depth of OKINAWA KARATE both domestically and internationally.
